Ian Glen - bassoon
Glen Capra - piano

iAccomplished Brighton based musicians, Ian Glen – bassoon, and Glen Capra – piano, formed “The Glens” in 2004 to explore shared musical interests and perform some of the more unusual pieces composed for Bassoon and Piano, in their own inimitable style.

Bassoon and Piano is a wonderful combination as the sonority of the bassoon and the percussive nature of the piano compliment each other on every level. The Glens repertoire embraces this ideal and combines well known favourites and poignant classics with accessible twentieth century music.

The 2008/2009 season programme, "The Brighton Bassoon " is a selection of lyrical bassoon and piano music from English composers. From William Hurlstone's perfectly formed sonata - possibly the finest piece for this combination, through Richard Rodney Benett's finely crafted modern sonata, to new pieces composed for The Glens by Barry Mills, Paul Carr, Michael Finnissy, James Shenton and Chris Gander.

In 2007 The Glens gave first performances of two new pieces. Barry Mill's Three Pieces for bassoon, "Lament", "Play" with it's cheerful mischievous dialogue and "Dissolving Arabesques" which echoes the bassoon cadenzas of Korsakov's Scheherezade and Paul Carr's Three Pieces Blue - three serene blues influenced miniatures which work perfectly in Pauls bassoon and piano arrangement.
